Herb and Dorothy

I came across this documentary after searching a composer from another documentary that I enjoyed and this trailer started to make me thing a little bit about who has access to art. It also made me think about how the act of collecting art itself is changing with New Genre pieces.

Over spring break, I worked with the Pomegranate Center in Issaquah which works to weave public art into communities. While working on site in Tacoma, a resident of the neighbor really challenged the center's mission by pointing out that this art wasn't respected in the community by being vandalized, and it wasn't what the neighborhood needed since many of the residents were struggling to provide their families with the essentials for living. I guess a question that comes up for me is where does art fall in the spectrum of necessity to luxury - and does it depend on the form it takes? Who can have access to art and who does without knowing it?

Love in 2D.... I mean, rape in 2D?

So last semester I found youtube videos of a computer game where you could rape different women using various techniques. This article, and the media hype it is getting accentuates the bizarre "dating" and otherwise sexual encounters of new generations that rely more and more on the internet. I was especially concerned with the "revenge rape" feature of one of these video games. Is this natural? normal? good/bad? A manifestation of some greater societal trend (Chatroulette, online dating, SIMs)?

Illegal Art

This website is a collection of people who have somehow broken major corporation's copyright terms, etc. It's pretty interesting.
How I found it?
Brad Nealy's "Wizard People, Dear Reader" which pokes fun at the first Harry Potter film.
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It's hilarious.

Own things people more important than you owned... for a good cause.

I secretly want the Fender Squire II Stratocaster electric guitar that was signed and decorated by Conor Oberst. If I had $800...

I think this is interesting. Possible project?

Pranav Mistry: The Thrilling Potential of SixthSense Technology

Watch this and I guarantee amazement.

hot chip's hot mess

Hot Chip's new video is the strangest video I have seen in a while. I really liked the introduction, when I felt like there was a clear parody and decontextualization of boy bands vs. electro pop. Then things got, in the words of a former 280er, strangely disturbing. It's enjoyable and really off-putting at the same time. Check it out!

Taylor Swift is a feminist’s nightmare.

"The Grammy voters chose someone who, according to her lyrics, has spent her entire life waiting for phone calls and dreaming about horses and sunsets.”

I thought this was a really excellent article.

Chatroulette Improv

Going along with our discussion about using chatroulette as a performance venue: This IS AWESOME! I want to go on just to try and run into this guy.

Another great real or fake?

Hey everyone,

Here is another real or fake freakout video from the same kids as before. I have always thought that the videos from them are real. How about this one?

Great Fun

Here is a website full of haikus written by Godzilla himself. This seems like a fun and productive exercise-- you could take any ridiculous character from any book or movie and try and write little ditty's from their perspective.
Enjoy!

Pleix-Birds

In response to Kaysee's post of "Dogs shot in HD," here's a similar music video (by a group or person that calls themselves Pleix) from a few years back that I always liked.  It's a good, high energy upbeat instrumental and very fun to watch if you haven't seen it before.

More interpretations of kids' drawings

This is a semi-response to the post on Dave Devries.

They are a series of photographs by Yeon Doo Jung.

iBelieve: Apple iPod Art in Chicago Museum

This following is taken directly from the following story: Apple iPod Art iBelieve in Museum.
"Apple products, like works of fine art, are no stranger to museums. This latest find is an unusual concept accessory for the original iPod shuffle, on display at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Great homage and spoof on the impact of Apple iPod on popular culture, iBelieve is a concept accessory made for the first generation white iPod shuffle. It’s an iPod lanyard with an upside down T iPod cap. This “divine accessory” snaps on the iPod shuffle, and turns the iPod into a hip technology icon in the shape of a crucifix."

Mini-Doc on Chat Roulette

There has been a lot of talk and craze about chatroulette.com lately.  I went on there last night for the first time, and it left me with a bunch of thoughts.  After that I did a bit of Internet searching for related documents and observations, and I found this interesting little mini-doc, which I would say quite accurately sums up my experience.  The maker of this doc wisely compares the experience of males and females on the site, and makes a finding that doesn't surprise me.  Chack it out for yourself, and for those of you that use chatroulette yourself, what are your thoughts?
BTW, despite the predictable equations of interaction here, this site does present some amazing potential to throw a wrench in the norm and do some wacky creative stuff.

Dogs in HD

I think the effect of the extremely high quality filming and slow motion really anthropomorphize the dogs in this video.

children's drawings with a professional touch

I really enjoy this project.

Snoop Dogg on "One Life To Live"

I loved when James Franco did a stint on General Hospital in December of 2009, as Franco the artist.
The article I just sent the class on contemporary performance art mentions that recent gesture.
...and I also very much enjoyed this recent perfromance by Snoop Doggy Dogg on the soap "One Life to Live."   The way things are going, we may see more and more of this sort of thing...bigger celebrities experimenting, morphing into daytime soap worlds, and daytime soap world's potentially having a kind of renaissance in which they find whole different audiences.
