People or animals?

When I see things like this, I feel a certain hopelessness. It makes me feel that at bottom we really are just brutal animals, ready to claw at each other and tear each other apart. This group of teenage girls kidnapped and then viciously attacked a 16 year old peer because she wrote something they didn't like on myspace. As payback they videotaped themselves beating her in the hopes of making a popular internet video. The irony is they succeeded. But now they are all facing punishment, as they should. Very sad.

This is crazy. Girls can be so vicious, it's hard for me to comprehend how girls only a year or two younger than me could do this. I am curious as to what exactly was written on the myspace that upset the girls in the first place...

as a journalist, i want to talk about what fox news is doing here. i think IT'S pretty awful, too. they're really sensationalizing the story and bringing way too much attention to it. the brutal clips that they play over and over again demonstrate how much they want to shock and awe their viewers. and the way he kind of eggs on the viewers is really upsetting. there are other things happening in the world.

This story was all over the news, not just fox. I think one has to be careful about judging the media as sensationalist. The public wants sensationalism (we really do, we prove this over and over again in droves), and the topic of extremism is fascinating in and of itself to me. If we want to make art abouts something, anything, then it is important that we refrain from judgement, even if it makes us feel something bad or good. Once we have judged something it becomes hard to find what is interesting about it.
