Monkey/Daughter

This is a video clip from a documentary about a couple who owns a monkey and consider it their daughter.  The mother puts make-up on "Jessie" and does her nails and such.  It's pretty weird and interesting.  Embedding is disabled by request so here is the link.

This is so weird. And so entertaining. I think it's especially noteworthy that the woman already has two (presumably human) daughters. I might expect something like this from a lonely, family-less old lady but this is a pretty surprising case to me.

I was surprised how tame the monkey was. I've heard new stories about people raising monkeys like children, and having them attack the "parent" out of the blue. It makes you wonder about how much interaction there should be between humans and wild animals. On the other hand, every once in a while we see or hear cute stories like this or christian the lion.

I guess I have a hard time seeing how this is different than a pet... I mean the woman treats the monkey like a human, but does she do so any more than most of us treat our dogs like humans? We don't necessarily put make up on our dog's faces, but don't we often assume them to have the same emotions and needs that we do? When I really think about how we have warped dogs as a species that caters to our needs for furry companionship it kind of gives me the chills...
