This is quite a fascinating site that someone recently shared with me. It is a website with pictures that are taken of all the different Wal-Mart customers in the U.S. As the website states in their "About Us" section: "This site is simply a satirical social commentary of the extraordinary sights found at America’s favorite store. Walmart is Americana baby, Enjoy! People of Walmart was founded in August of 2009 by three friends and roommates after an inspirational trip to Walmart." I must admit I was pretty horrified by a lot of the outfit choices, but it really gives one a special insight into Americans.

I have seen this website before, and heard a few different people talking about it. I find it a bit troubling, the way it makes Wal-Mart shoppers look pretty much exclusively like "trailer trash". People find that look funny, I suppose, and it seems ok to make fun of "trailer trash" (though it's not okay to make fun of much else). I know it's humorous, but I also think it's kinda simple and a bit one liner-ish. Wal-Mart is always the easy target. Why not K-Mart or Big Lots or Bi-mart or any of the other discount buy anything you need mega-corporates?
Also, when I go to Wal-Mart I feel like usually the demographic is pretty broad. I see people from all over the area, and I kinda like that. The representation of the local population seems much more complete than it does when one is confined all day to the Whitman campus.
I personally find this to be pretty interesting because people who are overweight and dress badly are a social phenomenon that is particular to our country. It epitomizes a profound lack of "conscious"/"aware" thinking that deserves to be commented on. I think that wearing ill-fitting clothing while being quite overweight is unique to our particular era. It is hard to think of another time in history where you can find this.
